DIY Fancy Bookshelf

So, are you running out of place where to store your precious books, notes, magazines? Don’t worry – there is a simple project, that will help you build that extra space! A diagonal bookshelf is not organizing, it is also a fancy furniture that can decorate your space! However, before we start – look around the room and locate the space where you would include the bookshelves. It is important because based on this location you would know the size of the bookshelves.

For this project you will need measure the space you have available, then buy the lumber. So, you will need:

  • Roughly 70 linear feet of 1×12 lumber
  • Screws
  • Drop cloths
  • Small paint roller and tray
  • Sanding block
  • Sliding compound Miter saw
  • Stud finder
  • Carpenter pencil
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Paint

Once you have prepared all that you are ready to begin the project. Now, since it is the diagonal bookshelf, you will need to draw a grid of intersecting lines on the plywood back. Then start cutting the lumber to fit the lines on your grid. When the two lines meet, carve halfway through the depth of the front piece of wood, and halfway through the depth of the back piece of wood, so the shelf pieces fit together. It is really important to make sure that they fit. Do the same procedure for the opposing boards.
When you are done with cutting the boards, it is time to assemble the whole bookshelf system. Secure everything with screws, glue so that the bookshelves won’t be falling apart. Next step is attach the back, which by the way can be made from plywood. Now, it is time for the finishing steps, such sanding and painting the bookshelf. Finally, anchor the bookshelf unit to the wall and voila! It is done! Now you have a fancy diagonal bookshelf that will serve your library for many years!
