Beck Residence Inspiration
Being located on top of the rocky seaside promontory in Corona del Mar, California, the Beck Residence is a former loft turned into an incredible family residence. Designed by Horst Architects, the house is an ideal space that suits the purposes delineated by the owners: it should be a comfortable office space in the day, and be an intimate socializing area for a family during the nightfall.
Beck Residence Interior
Former Loft Turned Family House
California-based architecture company Horst Architects has 20-year experience in building sustainable housing units in California. Not only the company’s designers make contemporary residence by following the principles of sustainable development, they also take into the account the cultural and visual background of the area. This is a story with the Beck residence, which was formerly known as an industrial loft space.
The residence takes advantage of the limited space by using all the available materials and without any compromises. Instead of going for hardcore traditional walls, there are sliding partitions and fabric that serve as dividers between the living spaces. The play between the lighting and materials also provide some spatial transition to the living spaces. As mentioned earlier, the house has two purposes: office setting during the day, and enclosed family house during the night. As described by the architect company:
Indoor and outdoor living is integrated by frameless, bi-folding doors. Windows are positioned to embrace the view of the harbor, while second skin systems such as wood shutters mediate the late afternoon sun and provide privacy.
It is also important to point out the interior of the residence. It is aerial and contemporary, outlining the location and highlighting the exceptional bay view that opens from the living room. The interplay of colors and textures in the apartment serve the grounding purpose for the interior.
Every furnishing item is balanced against the background of the area. We see lots of silver gray furnishings set against beige walls. The contrasting black wooden floor reflects the lightweight rectangular furniture, creating the contrast in the room. Overall, the residence is very balanced and modern, creating an intimate setting for both purposes.
