For a long time these caves were used by local farmers as a shelter from bad weather, but gradually the buildings began to come to an emergency condition. The caves were littered with rubble rock, ceilings collapsed. To put them in order, the walls were dismantled, cleaned. After that each stone was laid on its original place. Thus, the appearance of the caves has been fully preserved. In fact, they managed to keep this amazing architectural masterpiece. Besides the cave city of Matera today is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
