Share |

Contemporary accessories can be made from various materials that we encounter daily, but the shapes they might be taking are sometimes quite puzzling. Here you will find the recent lamp designs distinguished by their materials as they are made from wood, cloth, glass and metal.

Contemporary Lamp Designs

Stasis Lamp

Metal Lamps: Stasis & Cap

We will start the review from metal-cast lamp designs, specifically the Stasis Lamp made by Milan-based Studio BAAG. First of all, the shape of this lamp is rather peculiar, like something caught in a perpetual motion. It is made from metal sheet powder coated with rubberized paint and its form stands for perpetual stability.

Cap Lamp

Now, another metal lamp is nothing in shape like the previous one, forcing a minimalistic approach to the design. It is called Cap, and it literallylooks what it stands for. Created by Barcelona-based designer Florian Gross, this lamp is balancing on the edge of a metal plate. It is made from painted flexible gooseneck, a 1,5 mm aluminium board, a lamp socket and a bulb.

Glass Lamp: Yoko

Yoko Lamp

Yoko Table Lamp by Anderssen & Voll

Yoko is not simply a lamp, it is an exploration of a perfect balance between light and form and it is also a statement of admiration of Northern Lights. Designed by Anderssen & Voll for Foscarini, the lamp design is very daring, presenting incredible bulb-like structure, that seems to be about to explode. The Yoko lamp was made with a unique blown moulding technique from an innovative material – Polymethilmethacrylate.

Cloth Lamp: Nuno

This lamp is unique because of the use of cloth that was wrapped around its resin form. The name, Nuno, can be translated from Japanese as cloth. The cloth is meant to provide transparency of the piece, allowing the light to transcend through the lampshade.

Wood Lamps: Three Wise Men Pendants

Now, wood has been really popular as a lamp material, and some designers seem to like it. Samuel Chan has designed an intriguing pendant light trio for Channels manufacturer. The trio of pendants was showcased during Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2013 in Milan. The pendant lights are made from solid American white oak and American black walnut. Splendid and solid, aren’t they? What is your favorite material and design so far?
